On The Teen Beat: Radio Disney's NBT Finalist, Zack Montana Releases...

On The Teen Beat: Radio Disney's NBT Finalist, Zack Montana Releases...: Photo: Monatana Music Management Radio Disney NBT Finalist, Pop Singer Zack Montana just released a music video "My Wish For Christm...

Trying out for NBT 2012?

A lot of people have been asking me how to be part of NBT 2012.  People want to know how to audition, so I decided to write this blog to let you know.  Also a lot of people have been saying that I am an inspiration to them and I really appreciate that.  People say that I have inspired them to follow their dreams. And that is true!  You should follow your dreams, but I also think it is important that your dreams align with your talent.  And I do not mean to bring any of you down.  I just think someone who is 4'11" is not likely to be playing for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Just like I am not going to be a Rocket Scientist.... Science is not one of my strong points.  I feel that God has given us all talents.  Some of us are better at certain things then others.  You may want to be a singer, but you just may not have the voice to be a singer.  You may be a better actress..... or you may be really smart and might be better suited to be a Doctor.

What I am trying to say is, if you have dreams to be a singer, then the first step you should take is to find a vocal coach who specializes in this area of expertise.  Have them work with you and let them be honest with you.  If a vocal coach tells you that you have talent and just need work, then that is great.  But, if you are not blessed with a good voice, don't be down on yourself.  Maybe you can be a musician and play guitar or the drums or piano.  Maybe you can end up being a great producer or a wonderful song writer.

There is nothing wrong with trying.   Just make sure your dreams align with your talent.  If I can give you an example from personal experience, it is this....  I came out to LA in August of 2007.... I had no idea if I could sing.  I just knew I loved to perform.... I loved to be in front of people performing.  I had a vocal lesson and the vocal coach told my parents I could sing and to take me to a local karaoke night to sing in front of people.

I did, but I just did not sing, I put on a show and danced around and sang..... I loved it as I got a lot of great responses.  Within a year I was in a boys band and sitting at Interscope Records being offered a recording contract.   The negotiations broke down and the boys band was never signed.  But, it gave me hope that I could make it in this business.

So, you never know unless you try.  So please give it a try, cause if you don't.... then you will never know.

But, if you try and it is just not working out, you have to give yourself a reasonable time limit to see how far you are willing to go before reality hits you.

In my case, I have learned a lot over he last few years and I have learned a lot about myself since NBT Started.

Singing stationary is one thing, singing doing a dance routine is a completely different ball game.  In my first few performances, I was not happy with my vocals and I wondered what to do about it.

My manager, researched it and also asked a lot of people how to remedy the problem of singing and performing.  The answer was running and singing coupled with diaphragmatic breathing.  Something I have to work on everyday.

It took a good 30 days of doing it everyday, before I built my confidence up again.

So, there is a lot of work that goes into singing and performing.  I feel like I really grew as an artist on NBT.  I learned so much about myself.  I learned what it was like to be an artist.  How to interview, how to travel, how to rehearsh, how to prepare for a show.  How to adjust to different time zones.  There is a lot of work behind the scenes that most people do not realize.

So, if you want to pursue singing, then be prepared to work very hard.

I also suggest you find a good agent and a good manager.  I am lucky enough to have a great agent, who was able to get me in with Disney for a general meeting and some awesome producers.  My dad is my manager and spends 8 hours a day working on my career.  So, in that aspect I am very lucky.

If you want to try out for NBT.... You need to send an initial video into Kelly Edwards at Radio Disney.  Her email is: Kelly.Edwards@disney.com  Please be professional and courteous......  Once you submit a video to her, she will get back with you if she is interested in having you come in for an audition.

If you are lucky enough for Radio Disney to be interested in you, then you will have to have 2 professionally done original songs.  Those songs are important, because that is what will get you into NBT.  If you look at all of The NBT Artists from 2011, there are some awesome songs there.  "Live u, Love u, Breath u" by Tay Barton, "Invisible" by Ladina Spence, "You got me", by Hollywood Ending, "What can I say" by Shealeigh and my song "Serious" are all pretty awesome..... all of the artists had fantastic songs.  I have everyone of them on my ipod.  So, you have to get some pretty hot original songs.

I am not trying to discourage anyone.... I am just trying to be real with you, so you know that this is work.  If you are willing to put in the time, then go for it!

If I can answer any questions or if you would like me to listen to something you have, I will be glad to listen.  But, it would only be my opinion..... I am still trying to work on songs that suit me and see what is next on my horizons.  But, I am always willing to listen or share my experiences.

Good Luck to all of you. And let me know how things go for you!  If you make it, you know I will support you all the way!

:-)

My interview with Macaroni Kid North East Philly

Macaroni Kid (North East Philly)
November 22, 2011

Zack Montana of Radio Disney's NBT
Guest star for Philadelphia's 92nd Thanksgiving Day Parade

(Radio Disney)

Macaroni Kid got a chance to talk to Zack Montana from Radio Disney's "Next BIG Thing."  He will be one of the guest stars in the Thanksgiving Day Parade in Philadelphia.
Macaroni Kid: Hi Zack.
Zack:  Hi, how's it going?

Macaroni Kid: Just great!  I know all your local fans here are thrilled that you are coming to Philadelphia for our 92nd Thanksgiving Day Parade
Zack: I'm really excited, too.  I've never been part of a Thanksgiving Parade so it should be amazing!
Macaroni Kid: Yah, that should be really great.

Macaroni Kid: It's going to be a little chillier here than you are used to.  Are you ready to bundle up?
Zack: Oh, yes, of course.  I love cold.  I just love it.

Macaroni Kid: Have you been to Philadelphia before?
Zack: No, I've never been in Philly.  Well, maybe once.  I traveled with my sister when she did pagents, but I don't think so.  I am excited just to really see it.

Macaroni Kid: Who will with you?
Zack: My Dad.  Dad's the traveler.

Macaroni Kid: What's your Dad's name?
Zack: My Dad's name is Billy.
Macaroni Kid: Thank you.

Macaroni Kid: Will you be able to get out of here to make it home in time for a Thanksgiving Day dinner with your family back in California?
Zack: Yes I will!  I'll be arriving at like six so I'll be eating dinner around about 7:30 PM.
Macaroni Kid: That works.  OK.

Macaroni Kid: When you are here will you be on the platform or a float?
Zack: I think a float. [NOTE: He'll be on the Radio Disney float.]
Macaroni Kid: You'll be singing “Serious” and “Shorty’s With Me” during the Parade?
Zack: Yes.
Macaroni Kid: OK.  Did you write your songs?
Zack: I co-wrote them.  I gave the ideas for writing those songs.

Macaroni Kid: Do you have anything else in the works right now?
Zack: No.  I'm just waiting for the competition to be done then I'll be focusing on trying to get votes. After this I'll be in a recording studio and just writing music.

Macaroni Kid: I've heard your music described as Pop/R&B.  Would you agree with that?
Zack: I would agree with that.

Macaroni Kid: I've heard your sound compared to Justin Bieber.  Do you feel like you sound like Justin at all?
Zack: I'm trying not to sound like Justin.  I'm trying to get away from the beat because I don't want to go in that same path because he already took that path. So I'm trying to bring in new kind of style of art; I'm kind of like trying to bring the style of Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Elvis kind of thing back.
Macaroni Kid: That's some of my favorite people you're talking about, so that'll be great.
Zack: Oh yeah.

Macaroni Kid: I read that you have performed with your sister.
Zack: She was in a Billy Ray Cyrus video with me called Somebody Said a Prayer.
Macaroni Kid: Have you two have been doing anything together since then?
Zack: No.  We're just doing brother and sister things together at home.
Macaroni Kid: That's pretty cool.
Zack: Yeah.

Macaroni Kid: When you are filming NBT, how long are you on the set?  All day?
Zack: I guess you could say that.  Sometimes we stay a little late, or go in before the shooting goes on, and it depends on how long it takes to shoot.  Sometimes it will be about six hours during the shooting process.
Macaroni Kid: How do work school into that?
Zack: Oh, well, I am homeschooled.  I meet a teacher once a week and she gives me different subjects to do. Then I can work around it.  If I can't come in one day of the week she'll just say come in next week and she'll give it to me next week.  It is so much easier than going to public school, because when I went to public school, I missed 30 days and I don't want to do that again.

Macaroni Kid: I understand you are interested in acting and have done some commercials.
Zack: Yeah, actually it's funny because I wasn't supposed to do the acting.  I was just going to follow my sister.  We're from Tampa, in Florida.  So I followed my sister with the acting over here, then I did a Hyundai commercial.  I did a Danimals commercial with Dylan and Cole Sprouse.  I did a Camp Rock commercial.  I did different types of commercials.  But then I followed it into music.

Macaroni Kid:  I've listened to your songs and really enjoyed them.  I know you have a lot of fans over here and should have some yelling, screaming girls along the parade route!
Zack: Awesome!

Macaroni Kid: Since you are going to be in Philly for Thanksgiving, could you just tell us what you are going to be most thankful for this year at Thanksgiving?
Zack: What I will be most thankful for this year at Thanksgiving is to be able to perform in Philadelphia.  Like always, spendimg time with my family, and getting to perform and show everybody what I can do.  It's going to be fun and I'm just so thankful to even get to be in this competition and just be in a parade because it's my first one and I'm excited!
Macaroni Kid: You sound excited.
Macaroni Kid: I wish you the very best and we'll have to get some votes in there for you.
Zack: Thank you very much, I appreciate that.
Macaroni Kid: You're welcome.

Macaroni Kid: Thank you for interviewing with Macaroni Kid.  I'm really excited that I got to talk with you.
Zack: Oh, no problem.  Any time.

Macaroni Kid: Thank you.  Take care.
Zack: OK, you, too.  Bye.

Twitter, Tweets and Tips

Hey guys,
First of all, I want to say how much I really love going on twitter and seeing the frenzy that is developing.  It is a very exciting time in my life.  I mean I started my twitter account in early June and I had like 18 followers for a month.  Then I had my good friend Maddie do a shout out for me and it boosted me to 500 followers. Once I started with Radio Disney's NBT, I have sky rocketed to almost 5,000 followers.  That is pretty cool.
I get tweets from people all over the world telling me all kinds of things that make a kid like me feel great.  And I do!  I feel so special and I am forever grateful to all of my fans, friends and family that support me here on Twitter.
I do however, want to address a few things, so I can help make things a lot easier for all of us.  I want you all to know.  I do not ignore anyone.  I appreciate anyone who takes the time to tweet me.  That means you are thinking of me.  If you take the time to think of me, I am going to take the time to respond to you.  It doesn't cost anything to be nice.
I do not employ a team of people to be on my twitter all day and tweet frequently answered questions to all of you.  I answer my tweets and I am only 14.  I am known for my dancing and for being athletic. I don't sit still to well. LOL.  I also am not a big typer.  So, I do the best I can to respond as quickly as I can.
If I am away from the computer for awhile and I get online, I try to go to the bottom of the page first and go from the oldest and answer all the way up to the newest.  A lot of the times I can not even get up to the top because I hit my limit. I hit it twice just today.
I have a few tips, that I hope you don't mind reading, so this way, you won't be so frustrated when you do not get a reply right away.  If you want me to follow you, I will follow you if you ask me to one time.  If you ask me 15 times in 3 minutes, I won't we can try again the next day.  Please be polite, I am polite to you, please be polite to me.
I will follow anyone who asks because when I say no, it would be like me saying no to you for an autograph.  So, I do follow.  If I do not follow you immediately, it is for these reasons.... you asked me a bunch of times in a short period of time, you were rude about it or I just plainly did not see it.  If it is because I did not see it ask me again at a later time.
Direct messages or DM's..... I do not want to give anyone the wrong impression.  But, I hardly go on DM's for the simple reason, that I have a hard enough time trying to answer my tweets and facebook page.  I use DM's if I am going to call a fan and I ask for you to send a DM to me so I can privately get your phone # without anyone posting it publicly.
Phone #'s Please don't ever post your phone # in a public reply.  It is dangerous and I do not want to ever feel bad about someone pranking you or harassing you, because you posted your # for the world to see.
Phone Calls...... I few times a week, I try to make phone calls to people. I get asked all the time, who do I pick for phone calls.  I pick out someone who I see on my page frequently.  Who is nice, genuine, polite and someone who is always doing something nice.  Like tweeting on my behalf, or making a photo for me, or writing something very sweet to me.  Or someone who is just really supportive.  I notice those things and I will pick out a few people a few times a week to call.
Who I will not pick to call.... I will not pick people who say, "Call me"  Or ask for me to call them repeatedly on my page.  I see you and I see people all the time who are patient and genuine.  I like to call as many people as I can. I really like to call people, because it connects me with you.  A lot of times, you can not come and see me at a show or see me at a meet and greet.  So it is my way of making a connection with you and letting you know I appreciate you.  I never want to get to a point where it becomes too stressful, where I have to stop calling.  And if I did call you, please let other people have their turn.
I, also do not give out my # so please do not ask for me to text you or to call you from my personal #.  I just can not do that.  So please understand that and respect that. I would really appreciate it.  I honestly, appreciate all of you.  It really makes me feel super excited that all of you have supported me so much.  I am just like WOW!  I can't believe it sometimes.
I promise that I will always do my best for you.  I practice hard, I perform hard and I will always be dedicated to my fans, because I know without you, I am nothing.  Just understand I am 14 years old.  I like to do the same things you like to do.  I love to hang out with my friends, go to the park, the movies. I like to shoot hoops and play my xBox.  Just try to understand I am one person who does the best he can to respond to everyone.
I also have another way to reach me that is a little more personal and interactive.  You can join me on facebook at www.facebook.com/TheOfficialZackMontana Thank all of you so much for reading this and I look forward to tweeting with you soon! Follow your dreams

~Zack

Believe, Pray, Hope & Follow

Today, I had a fan send me a private message. She told me her mom had cancer and that everything was a mess in her life. Yesterday, another girl told me that she was bullied at school and made fun of. I had someone make nasty comments in an email about one of my videos. After a discussion, he admitted to me that he has been beaten and bullied and abused and felt like no one cared about him.

We talked and he apologized..... ever since I started the Radio Disney NBT Journey, I have experienced a change in my life in how people respond to me. People open up to me and tell me problems in their life. But, what most of them do not understand is that they are really no different then me.

People think I have it made and I have a perfect life. My life is not perfect, and I am not even a signed artist at this point. I have people asking me, "How does it feel to be famous?" I am not famous, I am just Zack.

If it is in God's plan and if I am lucky enough, and I work hard enough, then maybe I will have a recording contract. Right now it all boils down to me just being part of a singing competition, which I am entirely grateful for. The platform that I am on is fantastic. And I would not trade it for anything in the world.

But, my family has sacrificed so much for me. Emotionally and Financially..... I am not rich, I live in a modest single family home in a middle class neighborhood. I grew up with my sister and older brother in Tampa, FL.

In 2007, my mom & dad decided to come out to Los Angeles for a few months for me and my sister to pursue a dream. I used to sing and dance since I was little. But, I never had a vocal lesson... it was just me singing along to songs on The Disney Channel.

It was very exciting, especially seeing the Hollywood sign for the first time. But, it was not easy. I can not even tell you how many coaching lessons me and my sister went to. How many auditions, one after another. Sometimes 2 a day.

It gets to a point where you just accept being rejected. Sometimes, that just becomes negative, because you just expect to be rejected and you never really think you are going to get anything. It becomes a thrill to get a call back.

My sister and I had limited success, we had done a few commercials and a music video. But, nothing earth shattering.

The first few months in Los Angeles we stayed in a one bedroom apartment above a garage. And the rent was as much money as a 6 bedroom house that we had in Tampa. It was not easy at all.

There were times when I cried, I saw my parents cry, my sister cry. There were times when I did not have hope.

In January of 2008, my family for the first time started to go to Church every week. My Dad was saved and life seemed to gradually get better. Little by little things started to happen in my life.

Now looking back, I see every disappointment as just something that is part of God's Plan. I look back at my Journey and I see how everything that happened to me has led me to where I am right now.

Which is why I have total trust in God, for his plan for me. I know he wants me to help be a role model for kids my age. If I can help people in some way, then that is my purpose. God is using the talents he gave me to help others through my music.
But, I can promise you that. I am just like you. I have feelings like you do. Everyone of us all have a heart and we all have feelings. We are all made out of flesh. I am not better then anyone. Which is why I just love what I do so much.

I have some advice after thinking about this with my mom and dad. After talking and praying, I came up with some scriptures with my parents help. And I think if all of you, follow these scriptures, your life will start to make sense, your hope will be restored and you can start to believe in your dreams.

First, we all experience hard times in today's world. We all have difficulties.... none of us are exempt from them. Hard times come and go.... in James 1:2-4 it says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."

God tells us that we will have difficulties in life. And that when we do have difficulties that we should be glad, because it is a testing of our faith and blessings are on the way. Even if we do not understand it now. We have to have faith that God's plan for us is perfect.

Which, is the Second Verse I want to share. Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose."

God works all things for good as long as we follow him and love him. Even if you don't know why, you should know he is working it for ultimate good in your life.

You have to understand that there are seasons in our life. There are times when we experience disappointments and hurt, but we also experience happiness, and victory.

Ecclesiastes 3:1 Says,

"There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens:" Read the rest Ecclesiastes 3:2-8

Just because we are 13 or 14 years old. Doesn't mean we have to have the weight of the world on our shoulders. I know a lot of you see me in NBT and think that you life is horrible. That you will never be able to see your dreams come true." Well please realize, you have the rest of your life ahead of you. And maybe now is not your season, but one day it will be. That is why, you can never give up.

A lot of you feel like you are always fighting some sort of battle. It could be bully's or it could be problems at home. Or people telling you that you can not do something. But, you can.... Remember this.... In I Peter 5:8 it says, "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." This is making you aware that there is evil in this world, who is out to destroy and rob you from your dreams and your happiness. When you recognize this, know that it is not the bully, it is not the person who has no time for you, it is not a teacher who may yell at you. OR a coach. It is the enemy trying to destroy your goodness. And that same enemy is trying to destroy the bully's goodness. Everyone is good, it is how we deal with the enemy who tries to destroy.

You can win by praying and recognizing where this comes from. Don't lose your faith or hope. Your life can be what you make it.

Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."

But, you have to believe it and you can do it. You have to ask God and you have to ask him with the right intentions. If it aligns with his will, those things will be granted to you. James 4:2a-3, "you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss."

I could go on and on. It is all right there for us to read. God turned my family's life around. When I do not feel great or had a bad day, I pray about it, but I also know that there is always an answer in God.

I am not judging anyone or trying to push religion on anyone. I am just trying to say what has worked for me and to give you some comfort. We are all teenagers and we all basically have the same issues. So, never give up hope or your faith. You will get through whatever hard time you think you are feeling.

A little over 4 years ago, we moved to L.A. with a dream. My parents took us to The Chinese Theatre and we saw the Hollywood sign for the first time. Just a few short weeks ago, I was performing for Radio Disney, underneath a billboard with my photo on it. Dreams do come true. If I can do it so can you. Whether it is sports, music or if you want to be a Doctor, or even the next Steve Jobs. Always have hope and never give up. And never let anyone tell you that you can't!

Always your friend!

Zack

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi Everyone, by now you all know that I do Q&A's on Facebook & Twitter.  I get asked a lot of the same questions.  So, I thought I would create this blog.  So, you can know the answers to the most frequently asked questions.  I love to share with you and sometimes I can't because I am answering so many questions that this way you can see the answers in a little more detail.  Thanks :-)

#7.  Would you ever come to the state I live in?

#13.  How do you pick fans to call?
I pick people who visit my Twitter or facebook page, who are always on there, messaging me nice things.  Who are genuine.  I have called people who have made me cool pictures. I have called people who have made me fan pages.  I have called people who have written me something heartfelt and beautiful.  I have called people who have made me youtube videos to promote me.  Or people who are always trying to promote me by giving shout outs.  One of the things that, turns me away from calling people are people who just say "CALL ME"  Or they keep posting over and over and over.  I see the posts on twitter and I try to respond to most of them. If I don't, it is because I either hit my daily limit or it rolled too fast off my page.  Just be patient.... I try to get to as many people as possible.  I love you guys.  You all mean everything to me and I care about my fans and know that without you, I am nobody.

#14.  Who is your favorite singer today?

#19.  What do I have to do for you to follow me?
Just ask me.

#20.  Would you consider yourself like Justin Bieber?
Not at all! Not even close. I have my own style, I have my own look, I am a different type of performer then he is. And this is not a knock on him. I hope one day to be as successful as he is. I respect that he is a Christian, that makes us brothers. But I am Zack and I do my own thing.
#21.  Who inspires you?
My Dad.... because he has taught me that no one hands you anything in life. You have to work hard and go after things. My Mom who encourages me to do things the right way, and to be good to people and follow God. Musically, Michael Jackson... he just was such a great performer and he made a difference in the world.

#22.  What is your religious beliefs?
I am a Christian.... I belong to Church on The Way in Van Nuys, CA.  Everything I do is because God allows it.  But, God also tells me to Love.... I respect anyone who has a relationship with God. It doesn't matter to me what your beliefs are as long as you are doing good in the world.  I am not going to push my religion on you.  I am going to live by his example and that is what matters to me.

#23.  Do you have skype or video conference?
No, I do not skype and I do not do tiny chats.  Most of my days are spent doing school work, rehearsing and keeping up with my Twitter and Facebook. When I have spare time, I like to play hoops or xBox live.
